Volunteer with Us: Help Care for Dogs & Cats in Sri Lanka 🐶🐱

Two shelters – one mission: love, care & compassion for animals.
We run two animal shelters in Sri Lanka, and we’re always looking for kind-hearted volunteers to join our cause.
🏡 Small Shelter in Weligama
This cozy, home-based shelter is where I (the founder) live with 10 dogs and 18 cats, and we currently host volunteers here too. Volunteers help with:
-
Walking the dogs
-
Feeding, grooming, and bathing
-
Cleaning the space and cat care
-
Playing, cuddling, and giving love to the animals
This hands-on help is incredibly important so I can also focus on running the organization. Once a month, I travel to the big shelter in Nilaveli for 1–2 weeks. During that time, volunteers in Weligama take care of the animals independently—but don’t worry, I’m always available online for guidance if needed!
Perks:
-
Free breakfast
-
Fully equipped kitchen (cook on your own or together)
-
Quiet location in nature, surrounded by paddy fields—just 5 minutes from the beach and touristy Weligama (surfing, yoga, restaurants)
💡 Minimum stay: 3 weeks
Shorter stays don’t allow enough time for the animals to bond with you or for the work to make a lasting impact.
🐾 Large Shelter in Nilaveli / Trincomalee – “Lokku’s Dogs & Cats Care”
Our big shelter houses 190+ dogs and is located in Nilaveli near Trincomalee. Here, we also run several outreach programs, including:
-
Spay/neuter campaigns
-
Feeding programs for street dogs
-
Support for families and children with disabilities
How you can help:
-
Take portraits and short videos of dogs for social media
-
Create posts to help find adopters and sponsors
-
Walk dogs (including those with wheelchairs)
-
Help with feeding, cleaning, and giving basic care
✅ Shorter stays are possible at the Trincomalee shelter! Great for volunteers interested in content creation, photography, and animal advocacy.
